The Crappy Side of RVing: What to Do When There’s No Sewer Connection

Wrap Teflon tape around the treads of the pipe fitting. Screw the fittings into the head cap and secure tightly with an adjustable wrench. Before installing the filter, turn off the water supply. Turn on a faucet to relieve pressure in the line. Determine the best place to install the filter.

Tim Carter Size water line – The red arrows point to a large-diameter 1-inch feed line for all the hot water in a home. Use the following audio player: My guess is that most people don’t think twice about the water that will flow from the faucets in their new homes. You may not even give a second thought to the noise water makes when rushing through water lines.

How does a tiny house get and connect to utilities

I only have one shower and one sink. I do not have a washing machine, dishwasher or bathroom sink. My system is set up to be on-grid or off-grid and to be water conscious. Alright, are you ready? Off-grid means that you are NOT connected to city water and that your system is self-contained. On-grid is when you are connected to city water, such as in an RV park.

Dear Twitpic Community – thank you for all the wonderful photos you have taken over the years. We have now placed Twitpic in an archived state.

In entry level RVs though, the water heater may only operate in LP gas mode. Water heaters in other motorhomes might operate by a third heating method called Motoraid see more below , which uses waste heat from the motorhome engine to heat the water as you drive. Finally, some high end RVs may have an entirely different system in which the water heater is part of a diesel and electric central heating system, typically either the Aquahot or Hydrohot brand names. These systems are an entirely different animal and will not be discussed here.

A few models are advertised as being 16 gallon heaters, but these are actually 10 gallon heaters that superheat the water and then mix cold water at the outlet, making them roughly equivalent to having a 16 gallon heater at the usual degrees. The RV water heater can be operated in either mode or both can be used to speed up the heating process. Both are controlled by a thermostat, so the heater only runs as needed. In LP gas mode, a heater control circuit board insures safe operation, so 12v power is needed for it to operate.

Navarre, Florida RV Campgrounds When you pack up and head out for that long-awaited camping trip, all you want is a carefree escape. Camping units such as trailers, pop-ups and RVs offer the freedom to camp self-contained out in the woods or to hook into campground amenities. Whether just filling your tank or making a more permanent connection, carefully following a few key steps will prevent damage, get things running smoothly and ensure that your time away is, indeed, trouble-free.

When I first got our little pop up camper, I didn’t know the first thing about fresh water, gray water, or black water systems. I mean, I knew black water was the stinky stuff, but not much more than that. 😉 We have a sink in the PUP, but technically I had no idea where the water came [ ].

Polk At the end of your camping season you drain the water system, winterize the RV and put it in storage for the winter. One problem with this is that on most RV’s when you drain the fresh water holding tank there is still some water left in the tank. Let’s say you do manage to drain all of the water out of the tank. There is still moisture in the water system. Just imagine what can grow in that moist tank and in the water lines while it sits for three or four months.

I’d rather not think about it. This is the water tank that you drink from and the water you use to wash dishes and take showers with. We cannot assume that it will stay safe and fresh like the water system in our home. Contaminated water is extremely dangerous. We not only have to deal with a water system that hasn’t been used for sometime, but when we travel in the RV we hook our water system up to a different water source every time we stop to spend the night some where.

We hook up to city water, well water, and eventually contaminated water.

City Water Hook

The RV city water inlet on the outside of the RV makes it possible to hook up to an outside source, such as a campground or residential faucet using a hose, and have pressurized water running on the inside. To hook up to the RV city water inlet you must first remove the outside cap and get a hose that is designed for drinking water. A specialized RV drinking water hose is drinking water safe and made of materials approved by the National Sanitation Association, which contains no toxins rubber or lead.

Attach the hose to the unit directly or you can use an elbow connector to make it easier to get connected and disconnected to the RV city water inlet.

People at campgrounds are some of the friendliest most helpful people you will ever meet. I have seen it time and again when a camper pulls in and they are having problems with something and their next door neighbor, whom they never met, is right there to assist them. I have also observed and assisted several campers who were new to RVing and not really sure how to set their unit up when they arrive at the campground.

While talking to these new Rvers it came up more than once how they wished that they had a checklist to follow to make things easier.

I mean, I knew black water was the stinky stuff, but not much more than that. Well, gray water is the relatively clean waste water from your camper sinks and showers. It may contain stuff like soap, toothpaste, and food particles. Some allow you to dump gray water in the campground toilets or comfort stations. Others make you haul it to the dump station.

When we are at a campsite with full hookups, our set up looks like the picture above. We purchased different colored hoses, and we store them separately, so our gray water hose is never confused with our fresh water hose. It works like a dream, and I love it when we have full hookups.
