Han period bamboo woodslip found near Dunhuang, Dunhuang Museum. Silk, which was traded with the West from the later part of the Zhou period ca. Traders brought exquisite Chinese ceramics to Iraq in the ninth century, when it was ruled by the Abbasid dynasty , and Islamic underglaze-painted wares as well as Iranian cobalt were taken to China, where they inspired the development of that quintessentially Chinese ceramic technique of blue-and-white porcelain [Carswell ].

Perhaps the most important product carried along this trade network, however, was paper, a now-ubiquitous material which has had a far greater impact on the course of human civilization than silk, jade or glass ever had. Paper, which is a mat of cellulose fibers that have been beaten in water and collected on a screen and dried, was invented in southeastern China in the centuries before Christ [Tsien ; Bloom ]. Originally used as a wrapping material, paper began to be used as a writing material around the time of Christ, when it was discovered that this relatively inexpensive, strong and flexible material provided an ideal replacement for the narrow bamboo strips or tablets that had been used for writing [Figs.

Although the Chinese initially made paper from refuse fibers, they soon found that they could also make it from the inner bark of several woody shrubs, such as bamboo, paper-mulberry, and rattan that grew well in moist and humid southeastern China, and from then on waste fibers were not normally used in China for papermaking. See Silk Road Exhibition online at http: The arid Central Asian climate was quite different from that of subtropical southeastern China, and papermakers were forced to find different materials with which to make their product.

Think of it this way: This gift should not be something that she could expect to receive from her grandmother. Most modern women don’t see romance in fulfilling the housewife stereotype, so unless cooking is a real hobby of hers, avoid gifting kitchen appliances or housewares that aren’t directly related to her personal interests. While you may fancy yourself the ‘King of Romance’, there are a few factors to keep in mind when shopping for your leading lady.

The Term"Byzantine Empire” The name Byzantine Empire is derived from the original Greek name for Constantinople; Byzantium. The name is a modern term and would have been alien to its contemporaries.

Inheritance[ edit ] Inheritance is a key feature in CSS; it relies on the ancestor-descendant relationship to operate. Inheritance is the mechanism by which properties are applied not only to a specified element, but also to its descendants. Descendant elements may inherit CSS property values from any ancestor element enclosing them. In general, descendant elements inherit text-related properties, but box-related properties are not inherited.

Properties that can be inherited are color, font, letter-spacing, line-height, list-style, text-align, text-indent, text-transform, visibility, white-space and word-spacing. Properties that cannot be inherited are background, border, display, float and clear, height, and width, margin, min- and max-height and -width, outline, overflow, padding, position, text-decoration, vertical-align and z-index. Inheritance can be used to avoid declaring certain properties over and over again in a style sheet, allowing for shorter CSS.

Inheritance in CSS is not the same as inheritance in class-based programming languages , where it is possible to define class B as “like class A, but with modifications”. However, it is not possible to define a CSS class B like that, which could then be used to style multiple elements without having to repeat the modifications. Given the following style sheet: The style sheet h1 has the color pink, hence, the em element is likewise pink.

The oldest silk found in China has been dated to about BC, which means that it is from the Chinese Neolithic period. This silk was found in the Henan Province, a region widely regarded as the cradle of Chinese civilization. Another example of very old silk in China is a group of silk threads, a braided silk belt and a woven silk cloth fragment dated to circa BC. These items were excavated from the Liangzhu culture site at Qianshanyang, in the Zhejiang Province.

The oldest known written reference to silk is on a bronze fragment found at the Shang Dynast site at Anyang. The Shang Dynasty existed from circa to circa BC.

Silk sheets are slippery. Silk sheets require dry cleaning. As you continue to wash silk sheets, they will lose some of their luster, but will actually become softer after a few washes. In fact, many people find that they like their silk sheets even more after they have been washed a few times. Silk sheets will shrink when washed. High-quality silk sheets that are cared for correctly will not shrink significantly when washed. If your sheets fit your bed correctly before washing, they will still fit the same after washing.

All silk sheets are the same. There are a variety of silk sheets on the market today, and it can sometimes be difficult to compare sheets because many manufactures do not provide all the information needed to make an informed decision. This is used as the main means to measure the quality of the silk similar to thread count, which is often used with other textiles, like cotton. Ideal weights for silk sheets fall between 16 — 21mm with many believing 19mm provides the best balance of strength, look and affordability.

I’m a firm believer that good bed setups get you a lot of extra repeat business. Also even though sheets seem expensive, good ones last fucking forever. This is one of those areas where you generally get what you pay for. Don’t be fooled just by threadcount TC. TC matters if all else is equal, but it can be misleading or just plain overstated in a lower end brand.

A higher quality cotton is more important than a couple hundred extra TC.

Silk is a natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into protein fiber of silk is composed mainly of fibroin and is produced by certain insect larvae to form cocoons. The best-known silk is obtained from the cocoons of the larvae of the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori reared in captivity (sericulture). The shimmering appearance of silk is due to the triangular prism.

Silks were originally reserved for the Emperors of China for their own use and gifts to others, but spread gradually through Chinese culture and trade both geographically and socially, and then to many regions of Asia. Because of its texture and lustre, silk rapidly became a popular luxury fabric in the many areas accessible to Chinese merchants. Silk was in great demand, and became a staple of pre- industrial international trade.

In July , archaeologists discovered intricately woven and dyed silk textiles in a tomb in Jiangxi province, dated to the Eastern Zhou Dynasty roughly 2, years ago. There is a surviving calendar for silk production in an Eastern Han 25— AD document. The two other known works on silk from the Han period are lost. This trade was so extensive that the major set of trade routes between Europe and Asia came to be known as the Silk Road.

The Emperors of China strove to keep knowledge of sericulture secret to maintain the Chinese monopoly. Twig frames for the silkworms are prepared. The cocoons are weighed. The cocoons are soaked and the silk is wound on spools. The silk is woven using a loom. It is known as Resham in eastern and north India, and Pattu in southern parts of India. Recent archaeological discoveries in Harappa and Chanhu-daro suggest that sericulture , employing wild silk threads from native silkworm species, existed in South Asia during the time of the Indus Valley Civilization now in Pakistan dating between BC and BC, while “hard and fast evidence” for silk production in China dates back to around BC.

The formal name given to silk production is sericulture. It is a process invented and perfected by the Chinese, and a secret they were able to keep from the rest of the world for several thousand years by different means, including putting anyone to death who tried to smuggle the secrets of sericulture or the silkworms out of China. Today, sericulture has been mastered by many countries although it is still the Chinese who produce more silk than any other country in the world, about half of all silk.

They are true masters at the process of raising silkworms, harvesting their cocoons, retrieving the silk filament from each of the cocoons, spinning it into silk thread, weaving it into silk cloth, dying it, and lavishly embroidering it. How is silk made? It is an exacting and demanding process. The most prized silk is obtained from a special type of silkworm, one that comes from the Bombyx mori moth. It is a moth that cannot fly and cannot see.

Sunday, September 2, The Dating Game: Quilts and Color One way to understand American quilt history is to understand color. There was always color in quiltmaking, but the fabrics and colors evolved. This late 18th century wholecloth wool quilt from New England was originally red, but eventually faded to brown. Brick red is evident on the underside of the top fabric, seen through a small hole in the quilt, and in the quilting thread.

It could have been a brighter, more vibrant red originally.

Chem and Eng News, 12 Sept , p Researchers at the Smithsonian Institution have developed a way to estimate the age of ancient silk from just a piece of fluff from priceless textiles. The new mass spectrometry-based technique requires a silk sample size that is signficantly smaller than what is needed for successful carbon dating, the only other scientific method that can date silk, explains Mehdi Moini, a conservation chemist at the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute.

Silk is composed of intertwining strands of protein extruded by a silkworm and has been used as a textile for some 2, years in flags, tapestries, carpets, and clothing. The Smithsonian team examined aspartic acid residues in silk protein and found that, over time, aspartic acid racemizes, changing from the L form to the D form. They discovered that by measuring the L-to-D ratio, the age of the textile could be determined.
